In one of the most significant developments in the history of Studio Ghibli, it is reported that Isao Takahata has died at the age of 82.

Joe Hisaichi To Perform With Melbourne Symphony Orchestra

Joe Hisaichi will appear with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in 2 concerts in Melbourne, Australia, on the 27th and 28th of April, 2018. He will be conducting the programme Music from the Studio Ghibli Films of Hayao Miyazaki for the first time outside Japan.

Ursula K. Le Guin, Author of Earthsea Series, Dies

The author Ursula Le Guin has died. She wrote the Earthsea series, which was the basis for the Studio Ghibli movie Tales from Earthsea

Her obituary appears in the New York Times here: [2]

Her well-known dislike for adaptations of her work is noted in that obituary as follows:

"Among the other adaptations of her work were the 2006 Japanese animated feature Tales From Earthsea ... With the exception of the 1980 Lathe of Heaven, she had little good to say about any of them."

Miyazaki's Next Film Announced

The Asahi website just announced the title of Miyazaki's next movie:

The title is "Kimi-tachi wa Dou Ikiru ka?" (How Do You Live?)

The film shares the same title as a best-seller written by Genzaburou Yoshino in 1937.

Horus, Prince of the Sun US DVD

The Ghibli Blog has a press release from Discotek Media with details on the anticipated December 23 release of Isao Takahata's first film as director. A classic of the genre, Miyazaki served as a key animator and his contributions to the film were so great that they had to create a new job title, "Scene Design," just for him.

Blu-ray News

Via WTK via The Fandom Post. November 18 sees the release of three films on BD in North America: The Wind Rises, Princess Mononoke, and Kiki's Delivery Service.

A Spirited Away BD is scheduled for release on August 26 in Hong Kong. It'll include English subtitles for importers.

Newly Discovered Species Named After Totoro

From ScienceBlogs:

A new species of velvet worm (Eoperipatus totoros) is the first to be described from Vietnam after its discovery in 2010. This 2.5 inch long worm is distinguished from other velvet worms by hairs with unique shapes that cover its body.

The worm's legs do resemble those from the Catbus.

The Economist Covers Reactions to "The Wind Rises", English Books On the Way

An article titled "A celebrated director upsets some fans and angers conservatives" covers controversy sparked by the film in Japan:

In a country where politicians regularly rattle the ghosts of the past, this film has sparked debate. Mr Miyazaki recently published an article in which he said he was “disgusted” by government plans to upgrade Japan’s army and “taken aback” by the leadership’s ignorance of history. Though he did not mention him by name, the attack was clearly aimed at Shinzo Abe, Japan’s prime minister. Conservatives have responded by telling Mr Miyazaki to stay out of politics. Worse, some have called the film’s slow-moving style and lack of digital fireworks “boring”.

Amazon pre-order pages for the English translation of Miyazaki's Turning Point and The Art of Princess Mononoke are up. Both books are scheduled for release in 2014. A softcover edition of Starting Point is also scheduled for the same time.

Miyazaki Interview

The Asahi Shimbun has a lengthy excerpt on their website. A sampling:

Q: You are anti-war, and yet, you are deeply in love with the Zero, which was essentially a weapon of war. You see an inconsistency there, don't you?

A: I am a bundle of contradictions. The love of weaponry is often a manifestation of infantile traits in an adult. A university professor of public finance once gave a most eloquent lecture on how the war economy destroys the national economy. I was shocked by how much money I'd wasted on my collection of books and models of weapons, and I ended up trashing them all.

Yet, when I saw such books a few years later, I couldn't resist buying them again. But, by then, I realized that my own perception had changed completely. What happens when you go to war with a country that has far superior industrial and natural resources than you do? You get your answer immediately when you compare the numbers of fighter aircraft made by Japan with those by Britain and the United States during the war.

The Zero aircraft became involved in the war of attrition the latter half of World War II had become, and Japan rapidly lost its finest pilots. From then on, everything began to go south. Structurally, the Zero was not designed for mass production. Noting the Zero's extremely complex structure, a European scholar of the history of aviation actually wrote that he was truly amazed by the fact that the Japanese had built more than 10,000 of them.

Kaguya-hime no Monogatari Theme Song

The theme song for Kaguya-hime no Monogatari was announced in an Yomiuri article. Titled "Inochi no Kioku" (literally "Memory of Life") it is written and sung by Kazumi Nikaidou. The song is scheduled for release on July 24 on the Yamaha Music Communications label.

Jiro keeps on talking all the time and in addition he sings a song and speaks French and German. I was completely tricked!

Hideaki Anno to Voice Jiro Horikoshi in Kaze Tachinu

The director of Evangelion and key person behind the Ohmu vs. God Soldier battle scene in Nausicaa is lending his voice to Jiro Horikoshi, the inventor of the Zero Fighter, in Miyazaki's upcoming film Kaze Tachinu.

Upcoming UK Cinema Releases, Studio Ghibli Museum Library Release

The UK Film Distributors' Association website lists Grave of the Fireflies and My Neighbor Totoro as showing for the 25th Anniversary of their original double bill, on May 24. Both are available to cinemas only as Digital Cinema Packages and will have an original-language version with English-language subtitles. It's possible that dubbed versions might be available as well, but it's not clear from the information so far. StudioCanal is distributing the films along with From Up on Poppy Hill which opens in the UK on August 2.

In Studio Ghibli Museum Library news their next theatrical release was announced at the end of April to be Arrugas, directed by Ignacio Ferreras, to be released in Japanese cinemas as Shiwa (しわ) on June 22. US distributor GKIDS has a release of it planned for sometime in 2013. year.

Lupin on Hulu, "Porco Rosso" BD Scheduled

  • US and proxy users can watch the Miyazaki-directed episodes of the second Lupin TV series (Albatross: Wings of Death and Aloha Lupin) on Hulu.

Death of Toren Smith

The founder of Studio Proteus and personally-selected English co-translator of the first volumes of the Nausicaa manga passed away yesterday just short of his 53rd birthday. The New MIYAZAKI Generation, Spreading Even into English Speaking Countries is an article Smith wrote explaining his history with manga and how Miyazaki ended up tapping Studio Proteus for the translation. Jonathan Clements has posted an obituary at the Manga UK site.

"Kaze Tachinu" Release Date is July 20

Toshio Suzuki reveals on a poster, "Between ourselves, the release date is July 20."

Usually at this distance before the release date Studio Ghibli's advertising team will visit theaters and ask for cooperation with the "Toho Advertising Caravan". This is the Arrietty Toho Advertising Caravan report by Ghibli complete with signed Toshio Suzuki poster.

From Up on Poppy Hill US Premiere

Goro Miyazaki's sophomore effort is part of the 2013 New York International Children's Film Festival and is showing on March 13 and 14 in dubbed form. Part of the festival blurb:

More than any Studio Ghibli film, From Up on Poppy Hill embodies a specific time and place and captures the emotional landscape of its setting. This sense of yearning and possibility is palpable (the upbeat mood is captured perfectly by the period pop music), evoking both a wide-eyed hope for the future, and a longing nostalgia for a past that can never be recovered.

Kaguya-hime Delayed

(ANN via Eiga) The official website announced a delay until the fall for the Isao Takahata film due to unfinished storyboards. A simultaneous release with Miyazaki's "Kaze Tachinu" had been in the works.
