If you have a question to ask the mailing list, please first make sure the answer isn't already here.

Who is Miyazaki?

Glad you asked! You can visit the Miyazaki Home Page to find out more about this director and his films, as well as those of his colleague and studio.

Why is "Nausicaa" / "Nausicaä" in the name of the list?

Nausicaa@listserv.brown.edu is the e-mail address used to send messages among subscribers of the mailing list, which is based on the name of the principal character in Miyazaki's long-running manga Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.

Why is the list address Nausicaa@... instead of Miyazaki@...?

Because, back when this list was formed, it was felt that the name of the manga/film was more familiar to people than the name of its writer/director.

What's with "a" vs. "ä"?

The "ä" (a-umlaut) in Nausicaä comes from the Anglicized version of the name of a character from the Greek classic, Homer's Odyssey. Miyazaki was inspired to write a story about a princess in a far future setting, based on that one from the past.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to type a "ä" character on some computer systems and it often can't be transmitted properly over e-mail, so a normal "a" is often used instead.

How do I pronounce Nausicaä?

Here are some sample phonetic spellings from various languages, all of which appear to be in use, depending on who you talk to:
Japanese:
Na u si ka / Na u shi ka
English:
Nawshika / Nowshikka / Nowsska / Nausea (bad pun)
Greek:
now SICK ah (the middle syllable is stressed; "now" is closer to "naw", when pronounced as "now", not "gnaw" -- Tyler King)

What is acceptable behavior on the list?

Netiquette

Please read and understand the Mailing List Etiquette FAQ. You may also wish to read an RFC about Netiquette, and the Rev. Bob Crispin's treatise. Your participation in the Miyazaki Mailing List will be taken to imply agreement with and compliance with these guidelines. Violators will be warned, then removed from the mailing list if necessary.

Overquoting

Overquoting means quoting too much of someone else's message when you reply to it. Please note the following guidelines:

Meaningful Subject Headers

Try to update the Subject header whenever you reply to a message but change the topic of the thread of discussion. It is difficult to decide what messages to read and what messages to ignore when, for example, a message with the subject "Re: Kiki/AX" (which some people want to read) really talks about the technical specifications of DVD (which few people want to read).

HTML mail and MIME attachments: why NOT to send them

Learn how to configure mail clients to send plain ASCII text. This will help prevent you from sending messages which are annoying to other readers of the mailing list.

Why is it annoying?

Complaints

Complaints about other subscribers should be sent to the other person directly, or to the list owners, not to the entire mailing list. Complaints about the list policy should be directed at the list owners.
